Alex S. Rothstein is an Associate Attorney at Nathan & Kamionski LLP. His practice focuses on civil rights litigation. Prior to joining Nathan & Kamionski LLP, Mr. Rothstein served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. While there, Mr. Rothstein prosecuted a wide breadth of crimes, including crimes against persons, crimes against property, and felony gun offenses. Mr. Rothstein also spent one year advocating on behalf of the United States in response to defense motions for compassionate release as well as defense motions for resentencing pursuant to the Second Look Amendment Act. Under either framework, Mr. Rothstein was tasked with reviewing a long-closed violent crime, almost always a homicide, for which the offender was serving a lengthy sentence. Mr. Rothstein’s practice in these cases involved ensuring that the victim, or the family of the victim, was given the opportunity to be heard. Mr. Rothstein also examined the circumstances of the crime and the history of the offender to determine whether to advocate for continued incarceration.

Mr. Rothstein was also an Assistant State’s Attorney in Baltimore City, where he served in the Major Investigations Unit, which investigated and prosecuted organized crime, public corruption, and matters involving violent, repeat offenders.

Mr. Rothstein graduated from the University of Maryland – College Park in 2002, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. He received his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, in 2013 from the University of Baltimore School of Law. While attending law school, he served as a Staff Editor on the University’s flagship journal, Law Review, and twice competed in the William E. McGee National Civil Rights Moot Court Competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
